Cards you rate as "Easy" appear less frequently. Cards you rate "Hard" or "Again" appear sooner. Over time, the algorithm optimizes intervals so you review each card just before you'd forget it — maximizing retention while minimizing study time. This is the same principle used by Anki, the gold standard for flashcards.
